The Space Between All Things

I’m writing this on a bright sunny day after a night of clouds, thinning into gossamer, made way for the sun to shine through the blue. The clouds have been thick with rain recently and it felt as if there would never be any let up. It seems of late that there has been little let up in most aspects of our lives.

But here I sit in a chair in my garden, under a weeping willow tree full of softly swaying branches. I am lucky to have the opportunity today to look up and watch the tree for a while. I watch as the thin branches are busy dancing in the breeze and my attention is caught by the thousands of tiny spaces in between the branches, they too playing along in the gentle wind.  It is in those spaces that the light shone through, giving the tree an astonishing luminous quality.

This leads me to thinking about the Japanese concept of ‘Ma’ and how we can often overlook the spaces in between for the solid things we can define.
